July 2011 subcompact sales

Subcompact Cars

It was not a good month for many automakers, and this showed in the July '11 subcompact sales, with a few exceptions.

The Hyundai Accent is full-steam ahead with its new model, and its 75% increase in sales vs. July '10 makes that evident. The Ford Fiesta also sold like proverbial subcompact hotcakes. And hello Suzuki SX4: Welcome to the top three this month (+50%). Kia's Soul continues to sell the best overall. This month's big loser, however, is the Kia Rio, down 70.5% vs. July '10. With the new Rio coming out soon, we can expect that number go way up. Ditto that with the Yaris and Versa.

-I was expecting the Accent to be down more, it seems like the new model's in short supply at least in the Northeast, and there was a several-month gap between the sellout of the old model and its' arrival.

-Ford's expanding the upper end of Fiestas for '12 (but at $20k plus moving up to a Focus is tempting), but if they wanted the #1 spot they'd add an S hatchback to the line.

-Suzuki's had quite the recovery considering the product is a few years old.

-I'm surprised Aveo hasn't fallen off more. Clearance sale time! It'd be nice if they put the Sonic build-and-price up too.

- I'm just as surprised Nissan moved as many Cubes as they did.

-Still on Nissan, I'm wondering what they're thinking with the sedan-first split launch of the new Versa; it pushes away the buyers who are most interested in small cars for their own sake and renders the Sentra completely irrelevant.
