August 2012 U.S. subcompact sales

Subcompact SalesAugust's subcompact sales numbers are in. The Kia Rio had a stellar month with almost 450% increase in month-over-month sales. The MINI Countryman, for whatever reason, had a spike, too. Also, oddly, the Smart ForTwo had a big jump of 85.9% vs. August of 2011. More amazing than that is the ForTwo's massive 758.1% increase in year-to-date sales. More marketing? Higher gas prices? Who knows, but there are a lot more of them on the road now.

The big loser, again, is the two-seat Honda CR-Z hybrid, down 47.7% vs. August 2011, and down 67.7% year to date. It was one of only three models in double-digit loses this month. Nissan's unpopular Cube managed a month-over-month increase, but still is down nearly 60% for the year.

In terms of the newcomers, Chevrolet's Sonic has been a bona-fide hit moving 57,221 units year to date. FYI, I have now added the Hyundai Veloster, the and the Chevrolet Spark.

Finally, I must apologize for skipping the July sales data; sometimes life gets in the way of blogging. I know—shocking.

The Kia Rio is taking off. The upcoming 2013 Kia Rio SX with a 6-speed manual (only 400 of these being produced) is probably going to make it an even hotter seller. I'm waiting on a SX with a 6-speed manual myself.
