February 2013 subcompact sales

Subcompact SalesFebruary certainly wasn't kind to the subcompact car market this year. In fact, it looked a bit like a massacre. Even with gas prices on the rise, apparently people didn't buy the smaller, more fuel-efficient models. What's up with that?

The only positive month-over-month gains were the MINI Roaster, which I'm guessing was introduced this time last year; the omnipresent Nissan Versa; the "big" MINI Countryman, the continually rising Fiat 500, and—somehow—the Smart ForTwo. Every other small car make on the list had a decline for February.

The biggest loser was the MINI Clubman, which fell a staggering 62.8% vs. January. Then again, the Mazda2 and Scion iQ all experienced declines in the 60% range with the MINI Coupe and MINI Convertible also in the -50% range. Ouch.

In other news, we've added the small Buick Encore to the list, which is based on the Chevrolet Sonic. We hope to get our mitts on one to drive soon. But enough about that; on to the bloodshed ...

No numbers on the Fiesta? I wonder if Fiesta buyers care enough to wait for the '14 refresh and/or ST. I certainly would have gotten an ST if it were out when I bought my Fiesta SES, but that was way back in 2010.

Good catch, 24limes. I missed that one! I have added it.

-9.1% for the month with 5,015 unit sold in February. Up 3.1% for the year with a total of 9,300 unit sold.

I think the supply of Fiestas is already getting limited as they gear up for the facelift.
