The upcoming hot hatch from Ford, the Fiesta ST, will set buyers back $22,195 USD, which includes the $795 destination fee. For that, buyers get a 1.6-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine making 197 horsepower and 214 ft./lbs. or torque. It will also get an estimated 34 MPG on the highway—that's pretty impressive.
We noticed Autoblog.com has a poll on their site asking whether or not the car makes sense at this price, and whether you'd go with a Fiesta ST or a Focus ST, which starts at $24,495 with destination. It's bigger, but also has 252 horsepower and 270 ft./lbs. or twist.
We really like the Fiesta ST, and look forward to some time behind the wheel of one.

Hyundai Veloster Turbo actually priced at $21,950 (plus $775)
We (and every other car blog) announced yesterday that the upcoming Hyundai Veloster Turbo would start under $20K. Well, we were wrong (as was every other car blog). In all actuality, Hyundai says the Veloster Turbo will cost $21,950 to start, plus $775 freight, so your base price will actually be $22,725.
Even at that price the Veloster will be on par with other vehicles that produce 200 hp and drive the front wheels.

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo priced under $20,000
The Veloster will take on turbocharged rivals from Fiat, Ford, Chevrolet, VW, and a host of other hot hatchbacks in the A-, B-, and C-segments. The current Veloster is selling very well, and I can only assume one packing a turbo and quite a few more horsepower will likely be a hard-to-get car.
Apparently the Veloster will NOT cost under $20K, and the link above is now borked. Need an explanation? See The Truth About Cars.

2012 Versa priced at under $11,000
Nissan announced that the new Versa sedan will be able to be had for less than $11,000. ($10,990, to be exact). This will net you a Versa S with a 1.6-liter, 109 hp engine with a five-speed trans. This combo will yeild an EPA average of 27 city, 36 highway (slightly higher with the optional CVT). Nissan is touting the next-gen Versa as the "Big small car." For example, Nissan says the new Versa will have more leg room than a BMW 5-series.
Nissan has referred to the exterior styling as "upscale." I refer to it as "eh." Although it's not my cup-o-tea, potential buyers may see that $11K price tag and come out in droves.

No manual transmission for '09 Yaris 5-door?

Finally the U.S. gets the five-door Yaris liftback. However, are Americans not going to be able to row their own gears with it?
Below is the press release for the 2009 Toyota Yaris pricing, including the new five-door liftback. Oddly enough, it does not mention a manual transmission for the five door. Also, what the heck is a "manual five-speed automatic transmission?"
Hopefully Toyota simply neglected to include the manual transmission thing with the five door, or perhaps it'll be an addition in the later part of '09. Regardless, it seems pretty strange.
August 1, 2008 - Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced manufacturer's suggested retail prices (MSRP) for the three fuel efficient 2009 Toyota Yaris subcompact models. MSRPs will range from $12,205 for the three-door Liftback Base model to $15,880 for the Sedan S model when the vehicles hit dealerships later this summer.
Estimated EPA fuel economy ratings are 29 mpg city/35 mpg highway/31 mpg combined for all three body styles with an automatic transmission and 29/36/32 mpg for the manual transmission models.
The excellent fuel economy, combined with extensive standard equipment and fun-to-drive features make Yaris an outstanding value. For 2009, Yaris is available in three body styles: a sedan, three-door Liftback, and an all-new five-door liftback, each in Base and Sporty “S” grades.
All Yaris grades will now feature a number of standard safety features, including anti-lock brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), driver and front passenger front seat-mounted side airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags. New exterior colors for the 2009 Yaris include Zephyr Blue Metallic and Blue Streak Metallic on Sedan and Yellow Jolt and Carmine Red Metallic on Liftback.
Prices for the Yaris three-door Liftback models range from $12,205 for the Base grade with four cylinder engine and manual five-speed automatic transmission to $14,825 for the S grade with four cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission.
The all-new five-door Liftback model prices range from $13,305 for the Base grade with four cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission to $15,125 for the S grade with four cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission.
Yaris Sedan model pricing ranges from $12,965 for the Base grade with four cylinder engine and manual five-speed automatic transmission to $15,880 for the S grade with four cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission.
