Mercedes, my wife and daily eyes on the street, snapped this boat tail Geo/Chevy Metro in the Oregon City, Oregon area. WTF is this, you may ask. Well, Mercedes' first thought was also "WTF is this?"
"I thought, does someone need some more room in their Metro so they can sleep in it? Either that, or it's an Amphicar wannabe, or something," Mercedes said.
Well, the addition of a boat tail can increase fuel economy by quite a bit due to aerodynamic properties. If you're a hypermiler, you may be familiar with this money-saving, albeit aesthetically unpleasing modification. Although not exactly attractive, I bet this guy is saving a boattail ... er boatload of cash at the pump. Plus, think of all the awesome stuff you could put in that boat tail.

What's the deal with Oregon and weird mods/cars?
or is it.. whats the deal with the rest of the country and their normal uncreative purposeful cars? :)
@BSP_yaris: If you visit here, it might be a bit more understood. There are all kinds of bumperstickers and stuff that say "Keep Portland Weird." Ever seen the show "Portlandia"?
And I also agree with my good friend, xbeerd. Then again, he's been here. And he also lived with me in college.
El oh El: The new LOL.
The car's fuel economy can be increased not only by its exterior properties, but also within it. Why settle for being weird like this one when you can upgrade its engine instead?
It has good functionality. I only doubt if it is feasible though.
It has the use of functionality in the economy. It won't go into the big leagues but if someone would ever patent and improve this design...
@Andy Lilienthal: Never seen Portlandia, but I know you Oregonians do your own thing;) Starting with your green "O" stickers and ending with with cars like this.
As a travel nurse who travels and camps in a Prius V mid-sized wagon with two large dogs, I could totally see putting something like this on my car to get better gas mileage and give me extra space for a bed in the back
I was telling colleagues today about a metro I once built a giant tail onto. Astonishingly enough, this is my car and I built that!!! I did a search and even more crazy is that somebody took a picture of it and I found it posted here. 🤣🤣
The prototype was built out of cardboard and eventually melted in our Oregon rain. This is mark II. It was 100% just to get better gas mileage. Turns out that it added 5 miles per gallon to the fuel economy. That was from a couple months of documentation with some A B A testing.
Maybe cool, maybe not. It proved to me that the concept worked though! It was built by taking the hatch off, screwing down an old aluminum ladder sticking straight back and then building some white corrugated plastic and plexiglass around it with gorilla tape. The lights and licenseplate holder on the very back were probably the most robust part of the contraption.
As any geo driver does, I miss my geo... and its 45MPG. (50 with the tail)
