PSA: Stop texting while driving (from Ken Jeong and Joel McHale of "Community")

I am a definite opponent of texting while driving. I am also a definite fan of the show "Community" on NBC. So when I saw this PSA, I had to post it here. I think its hard to go wrong with Ken Jeong and Joel McHale, too.

This spot is part of DoSomething.org, a group that urges young people to do good stuff for their community. You can learn more about the DoSomething's "Thumb Wars" campaign by visiting http://www.dosomething.org/thumb-wars.

And for God's sake: Put down the phone and drive.

Well someone has to tell these morons who insist on texting while driving to knock it off.

Texting VIA voice recognition or quick response is whats needed.

It strange how texting while driving is made this big devil while many times more people die from drunk drivers.

No wonder why the kids wont listen to Baby Boomers, such a hypocritical system.

Thirty-Nine They can tell the kids all they want and crack down hard on it, but it seems as if the idea of treating it smartly isnt even being entertained.

When that happens and it becomes criminalized, it will then be criminal. Hence, the kids will find it even cooler to do. Those kids/adults who were on the fence about it will now do it to rebel against the Nanny State.

If a young star gets caught doing it and they go hard on him, it will become even more really cool to do.

Hell, I might even think its cool just becuase of how the system might treat him. Hey, at least Im being honest. Most others wouldnt admit that.

So your theory is that of reverse psychology, essentially. By telling people not to do it, you think they do it more, right?

I'm all for the voice thing like you're talking about. However, when people are killing other people because they're too busy texting someone, something has to be done.

And there are PSAs out there regarding drunk driving, so I'm not sure how you can compare the two.

Well you have a point Thirty Nine. My point is that if they ram Anti-texting down kids throats like they are Nancy Regan with her "Just Say no" crap, then you will get the opposite reaction that's intended.

Tell the kids dont do it, but does the message have to be everywhere?
Not just kids but adults too. If you overkill a message its going to piss people off and they will push back.

The system would then in response crack down even harder, and it would create this perpetual feedback loop. Humm..., kind of like the Drug War.

I think technology will be the ultimate cure-all for this problem, however.

Texting while driving is so dumb. I don't understand how anyone can think it's a good idea! WHY ARE PEOPLE SO STUPID?!

UGH!

This commercial is funny. I think if you want to reach the crowd who'd doing this type of thing, the best way to go about it is through humor. Get to serious and they'll do it just out of spite. Make them laugh and you have a chance they'll actually listen.
