Autoweek is saying that Chrysler is saying that Fiat is saying a four-door 500 is in the works and will come to the U.S. Allegedly debuting in Europe in 2011, this is going to be longer and wider then the two-door 500. They're also talks of a subcompact sedan.
Just a quick timeline:
1. Fiat 500 will begin production in fourth quarter this year in Toluca, Mexico
2. Sometime in 2011, the 500 convertible will be sold in North America
3. The "performance" version [cough]Abarth[/cough] will be sold in North America in 2012
4. Fiat-based subcompact sedan in 2013
With regards to the last bullet point comes the best quote from the article:
"Fiat-derived subcompact sedan to be imported in 2013. The vehicle would be built in Kragujevac, Serbia, where Serbian automaker Zastava Automobili once made the Yugo."

I wish I were in the market for a new car. I would have to decide between the Fiesta and the 500.
And since you brought up the Yugo, I'm almost done reading the book "The Yugo: the Rise and Fall of the Worst Car in History" by Jason Vuic. It's a pretty good one, if you like sad tales about mediocre cars. Although my sister owned a Yugo and I always liked it.
I've wanted to pick up that book. It certainly looked entertaining.
There are a lot of promising new small cars entering the market in the very near future. I can't wait until the 500, Fiesta, Colt, Swift, and so on arrive. The 500 should prove a worthy competitor to the larger MINI. (Who thought you'd ever get to say that?)
I hope it looks better than that render. It looks like a small minivan, long and tall.
Wow.... looks like no city car of my imagining. Still, pictures can be deceptive and I hope that's the case here.
