Autoblog is reporting that Chevrolet will be showing a turbocharged variant of the next-generation Aveo at the Detroit Auto Show. Although little details are available, it will likely be the 1.4-liter turbo engine that'll be in the forthcoming Cruze.
Autoblog is also reporting the new next-gen Aveo will be sportier and look better. Additionally, the vehicle will be built in the United States, not Korea.
Although the current Aveo isn't one of my favorite cars, I'm all for an improved version from the U.S. And, I will give Chevy major kudos if they actually release a turbocharged subcompact "hot hatch." It'd be the only one on the market, sans the MINI Cooper S. Kind of reminds me of the old Chevrolet Sprint Turbo—except this would truly be built by Chevrolet (not Suzuki).

Needs a new name; why saddle it with a name the old car's already lent its', um, reputation to?
I think that's a great, point. Oddly, I was literally JUST thinking about that about 5 minutes before logging on.
New name, new powerplant, new car. Although Aveo has some brand recognition, it might be the kind they want.
Where I live Aveos are more popular than the Yaris and Fit, combined. I see them all the time. So apparently they are popular with some segment of the USA.
I don't understand why, of course. If you buy a reliable used car for the same amount of money you'll get more space and a better car. It seems like a waste of money to me to buy the Aveo.
That being said, it's about time Chevy updated the Aveo line. If they'd put any effort at all at making it look nice, be reliable, and have an engine with some punch, people will buy it. I mean, they buy it now, and it's crappy! Imagine what'll happen if they actually TRIED?
I'm in favor of the plan, but also think a different name would allow buyers to turn a page. To me, GMC seems inclined to go for more horsepower when they are out of ideas. I love to see more performance oriented pocket-rockets, so I totally approve of the turbo, but Chevrolet has to pay attention to the little things, (which are huge) like fit and finish, quality control, exterior styling and warranty. Otherwise buyers like myself would remain unmoved. I was totally aware of the Cobalt SS for instance, but had little interest in it, because the styling was dated, the warranty was mediocre, and the fit and finish was suspect.
I honestly couldn't care less.
GM can't produce a quality small car on their own. GM can barely even produce a mediocre quality regular vehicle.
I don't have high hopes for this new Aveo.
