Pics: 2012 Toyota Yaris Debuts at Lollapalooza

2012 Toyota Yaris

Toyota decided to give a first-look at the 2012 Toyota Yaris at, of all places, the Lollapalooza Music Festival in Chicago today. Here are some photos via a user at YarisWorld.com. Gone is the center gauge cluster, replaced by a traditional set of gauges. Also, it looks like a big head unit, possibly sourced from the Scion line? No official details on the engine yet, but previous info has suggested the 1.5-liter 1NZ-FE may carry over from the Yaris, which carried over from the Scion xB and xA, and Toyota Echo.

UPDATE-9:23am: Pics apparently came from Cars.com. Also, according to this article, the Yaris' fuel economy will go up to 30/35 with the automatic, and 30/38 with the manual—up a couple of ticks from the previous generation. This suggest they are likely using the 1NZ-FE engine again.

Well, well, well... finally put the speedometer in the right spot, did they? ;)

The wide cut out in the front bumper looks like it is sized for a larger euro sized plate, I wonder if this particular example is full US spec? It seems like all US market Toyotas of late have had either our local size or no front plate recess at all.

One of the reasons I don't like the MINI is the strange placement of things like the speedo. Top that off with the fact they put radio inside it. I mean really, what if I want to stick in an aftermarket head unit?

I'm glad Toyota at least has put the gauges back where the driver can easily see them.

Is there a sedan?

No sedan at launch, not sure if that means NO sedan or they'll carry over the old one.

Yaris became such a hit among the public that it simply wiped off the competition, gaining much more success rate than its predecessors, the Tercel and the Echo. And probably that is why Toyota decided to refresh the ongoing Yaris instead of moping it off the line-up, like they did with its ancestors.

I like the center guage cluster, much more than the traditional setup one finds with most cars. Sorry they have eliminated this, because it's certainly preferable in my opinion. Glad I bought my Yaris when I did....
