Toyota Yaris replacement concept to debut at Detroit

Next generation Yaris

Autocar has reported the next Yaris, or its replacement, will bow at the Detroit Auto Show in January. According to Autocar, the next-gen Yaris, which has been spied in Europe, will be a mild refresh, and use much of the same bodywork. Autocar also talks of hybrid models.

There has been a good amount of speculation as to the fate of the Toyota Yaris in the U.S., especially on and The smallest North American Toyota has been among the top-five selling subcompact since its debut in the U.S. in 2007, but hasn't changed much, and is due for replacement, or at least a major update.

Can't wait to see what Toyota does. The Suzuki Swift, Mazda2, and Toyota Yaris are all at the top of my list. Looks like it comes down to the 2 and Yaris though. I don't this the Swift is coming.

The only place where the current Yaris falls flat bodywise is hatchback cargo space, especially with the backseat in use. Other than that, it doesn't need to be bigger.

Lower the floorpan behind the rear axle and put in a fold-and-tumble rear seat, problem solved without an inch of extra length.
