By now, you're probably aware of the Mazda2 (based on the upcoming Ford Fiesta chassis) heading to the U.S. next year. Just released was some more information.
The Mazda2 will be powered by a 1.5-liter engine and a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. Fuel economy is supposed to be in the 30s. Additionally, only the five-door model will be sold. The car could also get Mazda's iStop start-stop technology.

The 1.5 liter huh? Well, that should do the job, but not likely to produce 120 hp some predicted. Probably around 105 hp. In which case I'm glad I didn't wait for the Mazda2. I was tempted to, because it's soooo light, and was (supposedly) going to come with a 1.6 liter engine. That would have given it almost pocket-rocket status. It still should be a great handler, and pretty lively, but not any more powerful than my Accent SE.
Why no three-door? We get barely ANY three-door hatchbacks here. The only subcompact ones are the Yaris and the Accent, right?
... and the MINI. (I don't really think of the Smart as a true three-door, usually).
My guess is that more people probably want the five doors. Just my guess.
Personally, I don't buy the argument from Mazda, and other car makers, that the American public doesn't want 3-doors. If so, why have I been hearing so many complaints about this issue regarding the Mazda2 and Fiesta....from Americans? The Kia Rio5 is a very cool little vehicle, which I test drove and considered. It is a sister to the Accent, with the same warranty and engine, and it has gotten a lot of positive
reviews for handling etc. It's a five-door of course, but hasn't sold as well as the Accent 3-door. It may be more than just a 3-door vs. 5-door issue, but I chose the Accent because I liked the 3-door look better.
I love the Mazda2 and I plan on buying one when they are released here in the states, but I still cannot figure out why we will not be getting the 3 door! It worked for Hyundai and Toyota (accent and yaris) so why not Mazda? IMO, the 3 door is the better looking of the two and I think if Mazda was to bring the 3 door here, it would sell well. We should start a petition or something LOL!
