Totaled Toyota reincarnated as 'Crashy the Yaris Snowplow'

What do you call a totaled 2008 Toyota Yaris with no doors, no windows, no front fenders, retrofitted with ATV tires, a 4-inch lift, a 7-foot wide snow plow, and a host of custom fabricated parts? If you're Scott McClure of Southbury CT, you call it "Crashy."

The story begins with a Blazing Blue 2008 Yaris that had been involved in a wreck, totaled out (as evidenced at left), and put on eBay. Scott bid and won the '08 Yaris for a whopping $632. He intended to use the Yaris carcass as a test bench for electronic engine control development. (And I thought slot cars were a cool hobby.) However, as he started to tear the car down—and after using a 12-ton ram to get the wheels pointed in the same direction—Scott decided to take Crashy (the name was given by Scott's kids) for a drive around his property. He scratched the idea of a test bench and went for what he calls a "Yaris Utility Vehicle."

A lot of work went into the vehicle to make it a functioning vehicle, let alone a usable plow. He had to first get the Yaris in running order. Then, as mentioned, a custom fabricated 4" lift, plow frame, and brush guard were made and installed; and 15" ATV tires and a 7' SnowBear plow were fitted. VoilĂ !—Crashy the Yaris Snowplow.

Be sure to watch the video of Crashy in action; it's quite entertaining—and it picks up speed at 1:11. In addition, check out the links below; the YarisWorld link has Crashy's build with more photos and videos.

NonStopTuning 5th Anniversary Event

NonStopTuning—makers of short-shift kits, pulleys, and a host of other products (and Subcompact Culture sponsor)—is about to have its 5th anniversary. To celebrate, they're holding a drift event and car show! The event will be held at Gulf Greyhound Park outside of Houston, Texas. If you're interested in attending, visit the Web site below (or above).

Other notable things: Free Red Bull, raffle, swap meet, and live music. If I lived in Houston, I'd be all over that. However, I live in Portland where it will no doubt be raining.

Yaris in the shop: Clutch chatter

I dropped off my '07 Yaris at the dealership today. I've had some clutch chatter in first gear when it's cold, and in reverse all the time; something other Yarisworld owners have also had. Let's hope the dealership has a fix, or that it's not a major issue.

My 2005 Scion xB also had some clutch issues, although they were totally different (slipping clutch, throw-out bearing). FYI, I have owned seven cars with manual transmissions, and never had any problems, sans my xB and Yaris. Let's hope it's just coincidence!

Consumer Reports drives Fiat 500; says the ride is 'awful'

Fiat 500 - Subcompact Culture
A blogger at Consumer Reports has driven a European-spec Fiat 500. It appears that the author liked it for the most part. However, he said the ride quality was "awful" in Euro-spec. Before I decided to chastise CR for it's criticism (they had complained about the ride quality on a Corvette, too), I did find at least one other review of the 500 which complains about its ride quality. Allegedly, Chrysler/Fiat is aware of this and will adjust the shock tuning for American roads. Hopefully this doesn't dumb the driving experience down too much.

Having not driven a 500 yet, I obviously can't comment. However, I'd like to think the "awful" ride is due to its tight handling. However, perhaps it simply just rides like crap.

Have any Subcompact Culture readers driven a 500 yet?

No subcompacts from Subaru anytime soon

Subaru Justy

Ward's Auto is reporting that Subaru won't be reentering the subcompact market anytime soon in the U.S. Although many brands (nearly all brands, actually) are offering—or will soon be offering—a subcompact vehicle in the U.S., Subaru says it ain't gonna happen anytime soon in the States.

Why? To paraphrase, Subaru says it's a hard segment to cash in on. Basically, when the price of a car is so low, the margins aren't there; it's hard to make money on the vehicles.

However, Ward's says small cars are bucking the trend's overall decline. Ward’s says sales in the Upper Small segment are down 18.2% compared to the total light-vehicle falloff of 23.8% through November. Then again, just because they're selling doesn't necessarily mean the manufacturers are making money off of them.

Looks like those wanting an all-wheel drive subcompact are going to have to turn to a Suzuki SX4, or simply opt for a larger vehicle ... or buy an old Justy.

LA Auto Show: The Best of Times, The Worst of Times

By Jeffrey Zurschmeide

The Los Angeles Auto Show is the biggest, best, most over-the-top auto show on the west coast, and coming as it does a month before the North American International Auto Show (simply known as “Detroit” in the industry), the show has been gaining popularity as a way for automakers to get a jump on the good press for their product launches. So L.A.’s been getting more unveils and concept cars in the past few years.

With the Automobile industry still reeling from the worst year in living memory, it was interesting to see what was featured, what was hyped, and what was spun. Remember that what’s on the show floor today was approved for production at least 18 months ago, so the examples reflect the first surge in fuel prices, but not necessarily the economic meltdown.

Gone are the Hummers, the mighty 10,000-pound Escalades on the giant rotating stages, and the diamond-encrusted concepts on 42-inch wheels. Thank God—those rolling piles of decadence were worse than syphilis, and if it took a near miss on the second Great Depression to purge them from our automotive intestinal system, it was worth it.

But what we saw in Los Angeles this weekend was an industry in transition. We’ve left the 2000s for sure, but we haven’t arrived in the brave new 21st century just yet. Signs of transition were all over the show, and like all industries in a state of flux, the LA Auto Show had plenty to like and plenty to wonder what the automakers are thinking. So forthwith, here’s our assessment of the best, and worst, of the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The Best

Here are our five favorite new cars from the LA Show:

1) Ford Fiesta/Mazda2 - Both Ford and Mazda have been selling this pocket rocket B-platform runabout all over the world for years, and so it was easy to gin up a U.S. market version of the car when the fuel price spike hit. We think they should have done this years ago—back when the official Ford line was that the American public wouldn’t buy a car with less than a 2.5-liter engine. Well, here’s the Fiesta with its 1.6-liter DOHC engine, and people lining up to take a look and slide behind the wheel. About bloody time, we say.

2) MINI Cooper Roadster – We love roadsters. They’re just pure undiluted fun in car form. The concept MINI Roadster (pictured above) takes the convertible form of the popular Anglo-German subcompact and makes it a pure roadrunner. The rear seats go away in exchange for a larger trunk and better convertible top stowage. In classic speedster form, the windshield is raked back and the whole effect says Hot Rod. Inside sources tell us this has already been approved for production, and we can’t wait.

3) 2011 Ford Mustang - We’re Mustang fans here at DrivingSports, and that’s because it’s the most drivable and enjoyable of the retro-pony cars from the Big 3. For 2011, Ford has put new engine technology into the Mustang as part of a general facelift, boosting the base horsepower to 300 for the V6 version. This is the first serious revision to the model since the Mustang went Retro in 2005, but they kept the aggressive styling (just softened the edges a bit) and put their efforts under the skin where they’ll do some good. Ford’s on a roll, and we think the Mustang will continue to lead its class.

4) Lexus LFA – This is clearly Toyota’s response to the Nissan GT-R, and they rocked it. The car has design touches carried over from the last-generation Celica, but taken to supercar status in every way. This car has a DOHC V10 with a 9,000 RPM redline, 552 horsepower, 354 pound-feet of torque, and a top speed over 200 miles per hour. The LFA has design cues you’d expect on a Lamborghini or Ferrari, huge brakes, and aggressive body styling, plus Toyota reliability. If everything Toyota made was this sexy, there wouldn’t even be any other car companies.

5) Audi R8 Spyder - The Audi R8 has been one of the world’s great supercars. With Quattro AWD, over 400 horsepower, and a sexy looking body, the only way they could improve it was to cut the top off and give it more power, so they did. The car is now sporting a 518 horsepower 5.2-liter V10 like its platform-sister Lamborghini Gallardo, but with better lines and Audi interior touches, and a much lower price tag than the Lambo, the Audi still takes the prize.

The Worst

To counterweight the Best in Show, ere are five cars we think the world can do without.

1) Porsche Panamera – Billed as a four-door 911, this car is really just a Cayenne SUV with short legs. It’s got the same AWD system, and it’s about the same size. It’s big. Like Oldsmobile big. Lots and lots of trunk space and rear seat legroom. It’s for the person who loves to have a Porsche crest on the nose, needs to trade in his Cayenne because it’s not cool to have an SUV any more, and really wants a big ol’ family car. We’re sure it’s fast and drives nice, but so is a Cayenne. If you’re going to be that guy, then just man up and be that guy, y’know?

2) Mini Cooper Coupe – This was still just a “concept” in the MINI booth, but knowledgeable insiders tell us that this silly thing has been approved for production. Cut the top off and it’s a MINI—one of the finest cars to come out of this decade, with a lovely 1.6-liter naturally aspirated base model or a peppy turbocharged S edition. But you have to ask what was so wrong with the successful hatchback that MINI decided to do away with the rear seat room and trade the cavernous (and usable) hatch space for a tiny trunk and a design that says "Look Mom, I cut the roof off a VW Beetle and welded it onto your MINI"?

3) Honda Accord Crosstour – Here’s another “Not An SUV, really!” car that’s really an SUV with less ground clearance. The Crosstour is big, ungainly looking, and looks like Honda’s corporate espionage team got some good spy photos of the Panamera in its early stages. The good news is that it’ll be a lot cheaper than the Panamera. The bad news is, you’ll be rolling around in the modern equivalent of an AMC Eagle.

4) Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder - Wretched excess is the name of the game with Spyker. They take nice Audi components and build a car that’s stupid fast, handles great, and looks like it was designed by a committee of nearsighted pimps. Vulgar just isn’t enough to describe the Spyker, and it still manages to be overpriced. But hey, it’s a favorite of Saudi princes and soon-to-be-bankrupt pop singers.

5) Chevrolet Volt – GM is still promising that the Volt electric car will be available Real Soon Now - they just need to add a gasoline engine to motivate the too-large EV farther than its current anemic 40 mile range. Meanwhile, the MINI EV was introduced a year ago, and Nissan is rolling out the all-electric Leaf in December, both with over twice the Volt’s effective range.

Mirror mirror on the ground, who hit our car this time around?

Suzuki SX4 Mirror - Subcompact Culture
Ah, the hit and run. Possibly one of the most aggravating types of accidents out there.

My wife, Mercedes, and I took a trip to Tillamook, OR yesterday—home of Tillamook Cheese (they make the best vanilla bean ice cream, too), Cape Ape Imports (they import Japanese Kei trucks), and the Tillamook Air Museum. We parked our Suzuki SX4 downtown for lunch. When we came back to the car, we saw that someone had hit our driver's side mirror, breaking the housing and the glass.

Quasi amazingly, there was a note left on our car. A witness—and good Samaritan—saw a flatbed semi trailer carrying a steam roller hit our SX4's mirror. This witness stopped and left his contact info, as well as the trailer's plate number!

Amazingly, a Tillamook Police officer just happened to be driving past our car and we flagged him down and filed an accident report. The officer said these mirror bashings happen fairly regularly in Tillamook due to the narrow streets and high volume of truck traffic on HWY 101. He went as far as to say that he's watched semis come through and take off 2–3 mirrors at a time while responding to other mirror incidents!

The bad news is that the trailer wasn't able to be located, so we're stuck footing the bill. A quick search on SuzukiCarParts.com shows that the repair should be about $265—could be worse! At least no one was hurt. I think we'll make a Christmas ornament out of the old mirror.

After this, we decided to head to Pacific City, OR, home of Pelican Pub and Brewery. After a couple of beers—a Tsunami Stout and a "Bad Santa" strong ale—all was good. FYI, Pelican is located right on the water in Pacific City, and is a great place to grab a bite and a brew.

Chevorlet to show turbocharged Aveo RS at Detroit

Image from Motor Trend

Autoblog is reporting that Chevrolet will be showing a turbocharged variant of the next-generation Aveo at the Detroit Auto Show. Although little details are available, it will likely be the 1.4-liter turbo engine that'll be in the forthcoming Cruze.

Autoblog is also reporting the new next-gen Aveo will be sportier and look better. Additionally, the vehicle will be built in the United States, not Korea.

Although the current Aveo isn't one of my favorite cars, I'm all for an improved version from the U.S. And, I will give Chevy major kudos if they actually release a turbocharged subcompact "hot hatch." It'd be the only one on the market, sans the MINI Cooper S. Kind of reminds me of the old Chevrolet Sprint Turbo—except this would truly be built by Chevrolet (not Suzuki).

Volkswagen and Suzuki: Officially partners

Volkswagen Suzuki

Last week, it was said that Volkswagen and Suzuki were looking to partner up, and today it's become official. VW will have a 19.9% share in the Japanese automaker. VW will benefit from Suzuki's small cars and brand in SE Asia and India. Suzuki will benefit from VWs technology.

Press Release:

Volkswagen and Suzuki agreed to establish a comprehensive partnership
Important step towards the future for both companies

Tokyo/Wolfsburg, December 9, 2009
- Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft and Suzuki Motor Corporation have reached a common understanding to establish a close longterm strategic partnership. A framework agreement has been signed by
representatives of both companies today.

In terms of global presence and product diversity, the partnership marks an important step towards the future for both Volkswagen and Suzuki. In terms of product portfolio, global distribution and manufacturing capacities, Volkswagen and Suzuki ideally complement each other. The companies plan a joint approach to the growing worldwide demand for more
environmentally friendly vehicles. The management of Volkswagen and Suzuki have concluded that the complementary strengths of each company make for a perfect fit in exploiting their respective advantages as well as rising to the challenge of the global market. In the automotive industry, where globalization and diversification proceed in parallel, both companies will establish a cooperative relationship while respecting each other's independence as a stand-alone entity. Both parties are focused on achieving synergies in the areas of rapidly growing emerging markets as well as in the development and manufacturing of innovative and environmentally friendly compact cars.

To support a smooth development of this relationship, Volkswagen will purchase 19.9% of Suzuki's issued shares. The Closing of the transaction is subject to approval of the relevant authorities and is expected in January 2010. Suzuki intends to invest up to one half of the amount received from Volkswagen into shares of Volkswagen. Both companies will form a
long-term strategic partnership based on this which will support their successful strategies in these challenging times.

As demand continues to rise for smaller cars and for powertrains with higher fuel efficiency and lower CO2 output, Volkswagen and Suzuki will offer a compelling solution for customers in emerging markets buying a car for the first time and also for customers in advanced economies seeking to lower their CO2 footprint while still enjoying the freedom of transport offered by an exciting range of cars.

A press conference will be held on 5 pm in Tokyo together with a webcast which will be available on http://www.primestage.net/hosting/VW-Tokyo/

Company information
Suzuki is the world leader in the mini-car segment: with a workforce of approximately 51,000, the company sold 2.3 million vehicles and 3.1 million motorcycles in the 2008/2009 financial year (to March 31), generating sales revenue of €20.9 billion and an operating profit of €534 million. Suzuki operates 35 production facilities in Japan and other countries such as
Indonesia, India, China, Thailand and Spain.

In fiscal year 2008 Volkswagen, which has a workforce of 370,000, sold 6.3 million vehicles, generating sales revenue of €113.8 billion and achieved an operating profit of €6.3 billion. Volkswagen operates 61 production plants worldwide.

Aston Martin Cygnet concept = Toyota iQ in a tuxedo

Aston Marton Cygnet concept - Subcompact CultureCall me skeptical, but I just don't get it. Aston Martin released official images of the Cygnet Concept—a luxury-branded city car. In this case, a Toyota iQ wearing a tuxedo. I mean, I think the Toyota iQ will be a neat car—certainly a Smart ForTwo fighter. However, rebadging an iQ and selling it as an Aston Martin, complete with signature grille, fake fender vents, and goofy-looking hood vents? Sorry; I still don't get it.

On the plus side, I think the interior is cool looking, and I like the taillight treatment. Pricing hasn't been announced, but I can't imagine it'll be cheap. Then again, compared to a DB9 (or any of its other cars), I'm sure it'd be a bargain.

Now granted, this is still officially a concept vehicle. However, assuming this goes into production, would people really shell out the money for an ultra luxury-branded city car? I mean, this isn't like a BMW, Audi, or Lexus city car, this is an Aston Martin.

The Small Cars of the 2009 LA Auto Show

By Sean Murphy

The LA Auto Show wraps up this weekend after two weeks of big reveals for small cars. I had the opportunity to get to the show twice in a week to cover all the new cars and big news coming out of LA this year.

Ford Fiesta
Of course the biggest of the small news is the reveal of the US-spec Ford Fiesta. The highly anticipated Ford Fiesta, sporting a 1.6 liter engine and 40 MPG will include the new PowerShift electronic dual clutch automatic transmission. This will allow the Fiesta to be lighter than a typical automatic transmission car and has a sealed internal lubrication so it is maintenance free.

The Ford booth was packed with Fiestas in all trim levels and colors and even a few tuned and dressed up ones. Even though the Ford reps had no details on this H&R car it did look good with 18" wheels, lowered and with a vented hood. Ford even had a Fiesta Passport game that sent you around their booth looking for different fun things to do and then you had to make your way around to all the Fiesta's to collect stamps. My price was a $5 dollar Best Buy gift card and a Fiesta Keychain.

Mazda2
The new Mazda2 was announced for the US market without specifics. It is known that the car is based on the same architecture as the Ford Fiesta but the engine and driving dynamics being specifically built to Mazda’s "Zoom Zoom" quality. I asked Mazda if there were any further details, especially on the MazdaSpeed2 they had showing but all I was told is that it will be on sale summer of 2010 as a 2011 model and it will be a couple months (Detroit Auto Show maybe) that we will hear word on specs and pricing.

Chevrolet Cruze
Chevrolet had its big debut of the US Chevy Cruze compact car that will be replacing the Chevy Cobalt next year. With choices of a 1.8 liter or turbocharged 1.4 liter producing about the same power but with the 1.4L getting about 40 MPG. Chevy was also big on pushing the Volt with a large display, theme song and dancers. What Chevy was not big on was discussing the Aveo replacement. What information I did get was the Chevy Spark will be built by Daewoo and will not get to our shores until at least 2012 as a 2013 model. There will be changes made to the car, but what they are not certain of.

Kia Rio
As far as model refreshes go, the Kia Rio will be getting an updated appearance with the new corporate grill and removal of the black plastic trim from around the car. Mechanically the car will be the same, but you can expect some new interior upgrades to go along with the Rio's new attire.

Mitsubishi Colt
The big winner of the show for big news on small cars goes to Mitsubishi with its announcement of the Colt here in the USA. The EVO-nosed Colt is a current global car for Mitsubishi and will be up against a tough and growing crowd of B-Segment cars like the Ford Fiesta, Mazda2, Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, and Honda Fit. No details have been given yet, but Mitsubishi did say that we can expect a manual or CVT transmission and a MIVEC engine. A turbocharged Ralliart version is sold in Japan and would be the fastest B-segment on the market if introduced.

Suzuki
As for Suzuki and the Swift, lets just say I was told "Yeah we think it might make it to the US sometime. Hey did you see the new Kizashi?" Thanks Suzuki, glad to see you are looking out for the fastest growing car segment in the US by not giving us the best subcompact sold everywhere else in the world. Well, let's hope it does indeed come to the US sooner than later.

For Sale: 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass GLS

My good friend Jackie just bought herself a 2010 Toyota Yaris (it's already outfitted with a Subcompact Culture decal), and is looking to unload her old car: A 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass GLS. The car is dependable, but it was just time for something else. If you're interested, she's asking $3,000 for it, and you can contact me if you'd like more info (the car is located in Portland, OR). Here are the vital stats:

Maroon with tan leather interior
Power windows/locks, A/C
Keyless entry
CD player
Dual airbags
3.1-liter V6
Automatic transmission
ABS
Alloy wheels with good tread on tires.
Always maintained; regular oil changes, newer spark plug wires.
82,250 miles

Good overall interior condition, although the driver's seat does have some cracking in the leather. A few scratches in the paint and a bit of sap on the hood; a good buffing could probably take it out.

$3,000

Yaris ad banned from Web site; proves that Yaris owners are perverts

It's a well-known fact that Yaris owners and enthusiasts are perverts, and this film just reinforces that truth. (The film is filled with innuendos, so it might be NSFW for some of you.)

See, Toyota Australia had a contest in which people made 30-second films about the Yaris for a chance to win $7,000 Australian dollars. Low and behold, the film above was the winner. However, according to a post on Autoblog , the film was pulled from the Yaris film Web site after a barrage of complaints. Perhaps a sequel will end up on YarisWorld's "Sex in the Yaris" thread. Jeez—keep it in your pants!

Aveo, Smart on Jalopnik's "Worst10" list

Automotive blog Jalopnik put together its "Worst10 Cars of the Decade" list. The list was composed of many Chrysler products (Jeep Compass, Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Caliber, Chrysler PT Cruiser), the 2005+ Ford Focus, the Pontiac Grand Prix, Kia Amanti, and Hummer H2. Two subcompacts also made the list—the Chevrolet Aveo and the Smart ForTwo. Unsurprisingly, the Aveo was panned for quality; the ForTwo for price and fuel economy.

VIDEO: Spring Mountain Redline Time Attack with stock Accent race car

The Redline Time Attack series is darn cool. You see all kinds of cars: uber-tuned, dedicated "track sluts" to, well, stock track sluts. Case in point is Frank Ho's Hyundai Accent. This is a stock Accent sedan with sticky tires, yet he's out there flogging the crap out of that car! How cool is that? The above video is done really well, and does have some footage of Frank's Accent as well as a lot of other race cars.

You can see some more pics of Frank's Accent on this Honda-Tech thread of all places.

POLL: FWD + snow tires vs. AWD + all-season tires

With my snow tires on my Yaris and our impending "Winter Weather Advisory" for Portland, I got to thinking: Which vehicle would be better in the foul weather? My FWD Yaris equipped with studded snow tires, or my AWD Suzuki SX4, albeit on all-season tires?

In my particular situation, my Yaris is lowered, so it's got ground clearance going against it. However, in snow two inches or less, it probably wouldn't matter. In deeper snow, I'd rather have the AWD SX4, even if it is on all-season tires.

Then there's the question of ice. I think this is where the FWD with studded tires might actually prevail over the AWD system. Or would it?

So what do you think?

Which is better for winter time driving?

Yaris in winter mode: Snow tires are on

Toyota Yaris ready for winter - Subcompact Culture
It's that time again. It's cold, and they're forecasting potential ice this weekend, so on go the studded winter tires.

Left over from our Civic, the 14" steel wheels are wrapped in 185/65/14 tires—a bit taller than the stock 14" Yaris tires (175/65/14), but shorter than the stock 15" Yaris size (185/60/15). Frankly, I'd say they're just perfect. Bring on the ice! Well, not really ...

VIDEO: Wagon Attack 2—Turbocharged Civic Wagon Goodness

Maybe you've seen this on another site—maybe not. However, it'd be a shame not to post it here. It is truly a fantastic vid; great cinematography, too.

The 4WD Civic Wagon was a great vehicle, too, and can (as witnessed by the above video) used as a great platform for modification.

2011 Fiesta build and price link found

2011 Ford Fiesta Build and Price - Subcompact Culture
Hmmm ... whether or not this is supposed to be live, I don't know. However, it does work! Ford Build and Price - 2011 Ford Fiesta!

The splash screen says the Fiesta sedan starts at $13,320; the hatchback at $15,120. Sedan models come in S, SE, and SEL trim; hatchback comes in SE and SES trim levels. Steel wheels do look to be standard, with 15", 16", and 17" alloys available.

Mitsubishi Colt is coming to the U.S.

As you may have read a while back, I recently called Mitsubishi's Colt a "holdout" in the U.S. market. Well, apparently, the Colt is a holdout no more. According to an article on Autoblog, the Colt is headed back to the U.S.!

According to Autoblog, Mitsubishi made the announcement in a presentation at the LA Auto Show.

If you haven't noticed, Mitsubishi needs to bolster its current U.S. lineup. Sure, the EVO is a great halo car, and the Lancer ant Outlander are decent offerings. However, vehicles such as the Eclipse, Galant, and Raider haven't exactly sent buyers flocking into Mitsubishi dealerships. With the large number of subcompacts headed to the U.S., it only makes sense for Mitsubishi to bring the Colt here.

As a fan (and former owner) of Mitsubishi products, I'm highly anticipating the Colt. I'll be sure to post more information as it becomes available, too. (FYI, the three-door Ralliart version is pretty sexy!)

Fiesta Movement agents Brad and Emma win award at LA Autoshow

Fellow Oregon residents and Fiesta Movement agents, Brad and Emma, won the "Best Travel Mission" award at the Fiesta Movement Awards Ceremony at the LA Auto Show. This was Brad and Emma's first mission video, too.

Brad and Emma came with Subcompact Culture for the third-annual cruise up Mt. St. Helens this summer, which was first time I got to drive the Fiesta, too.

Way to represent Oregon, and congratulations!

Ford brings its A-game to the B-segment. USDM Fiesta specs announced.

2011 Ford Fiesta
The first reports about the 2011 Ford Fiesta are coming out of the LA Auto Show, and they're good. For starters, the Fiesta will come with a 1.6 liter engine making 119 hp and 109 ft./lbs. or torque, mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic. The DOHC engine features Ford's Ti-VCT, or Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing. All this goodness also means frugality at the pump, and Ford went all-out: 30 MPG city and 40 MPG highway with the automatic. That's class leading.

Ford Fiesta interiorAlso class leading is the Fiesta's interior, which looks nearly unchanged compared to the Euro-spec models—a very good thing. There's cloth or leather seats with a 60/40 split-folding rear seat; available ambient lighting; soft-touch dash materials, and more.

Other notable features include Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS); front, side, and class-exclusive knee airbags; and available SYNC technology.

2011 Ford Fiesta sedanAlso of note: The silver fog-lamp looking things: They're apparently LED light strips. That's pretty cool.

First impressions suggest that Ford has a winner on its hands. Now we'll have to see if there are enough takers in the U.S. Personally, I think it's the right car, the right time, and the right company.

November 2009 subcompact sales

November Subcompact Car Sales - Subcompact Culture
November was a lot of the same with regards to subcompact car sales. The Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio are still selling very well, the Nissan Versa is still the top-seller among the segment, and Kia's Soul continues to have a great first year.

The Suzuki SX4 did pretty well, down only 14% in November 2009 vs. 2008, and continues to lead Suzuki's overall lineup in sales. The Toyota Yaris was also only down 14.9% in November. The Smart ForTwo was again the low point compared to last year; the lowly Pontiac G3 has only sold 5,590 models all year (I still have yet to see one on the street).
