Isuzu Stylus wears flamingo Halloween costume. Then again, maybe it's not a custome ...

While visiting Cannon Beach, Oregon last week, I happened to run across this beast. It's an Isuzu Stylus. Well, it was an Isuzu Stylus. Now, it's flat-black and covered in tennis balls, wiffle balls, flamingos, and miscellaneous sayings. My favorite: "Heavy is the head that eats cryaons." Jeez—tell me something I don't know.

Anyway, have a happy, safe Halloween. Here are some more photos of the Stylus.

A bit bigger: Custom Kizashi at SEMA

I got to drive the 2010 Suzuki Kizashi, and really liked it. Now, Road Race Motorsport is going to display three custom Kizashis at the SEMA Show next week. Below is the full press for the Platinum Edition release.

ROAD///RACE Motorsports Unveils Platinum Edition Kizashi

SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif. — October 29, 2009 - ROAD///RACE Motorsports, the premier tuning company for Suzuki in North America, today unveiled the ROAD///RACE Motorsports Platinum Edition Kizashi. This car was 6 months in the making and contracted by American Suzuki Motor Corporation. The successful racing heritage of ROAD///RACE Motorsports has lead to a long standing relationship with American Suzuki.

A practical approach from ROAD///RACE Motorsports, gets the most out of an all already fantastic Kizashi platform. They have created a car that is enhanced in all areas of performance and styling. ROAD///RACE Motorsports increased the Platinum Edition’s performance by about 20% as compared to the factory version Kizashi. It also features improved springs, shocks, swaybars, and brakes. That makes the ROAD///RACE Edition appeal to a wider audience, including driving enthusiasts.

Looking at the Kizashi, one can see the great styling of the car; all four sides of the car show the racing heritage of ROAD///RACE Motorsports. Everything about the car seems easily attainable and not unlike something you could seem on the showroom floor. Even so, the Platinum Edition Kizashi looks like it is just a number plate away from track!

MotoIQ fills sport compact magazine gap

By Sean Murphy

The sport compact world has been without major tech magazine since the likes of Sport Compact Car and Turbo & High-Tech Performance Magazine have left the news stands. But for those of us missing the tech heavy articles and super savvy sport compact staff, we have a new web site to our rescue, MotoIQ.

With returning favorites such as Dave Coleman from Sport Compact Car, Mike Kojima from Turbo & High-Tech Performance Magazine, and Sarah Forst from Nissan Performance Magazine, this Web site is filled with the project cars, tech articles, and features relating to the sport compact world.

The project cars are a little Nissan heavy right now but there are some newer Mitsubishi and Subaru cars in the stable. MotoIQ has been around since June and sounds like it will fill a void missing in a lot of car enthusiasts lives right now.

New Suzuki Swift being engineered to meet U.S. crash standards

According to Car and Driver's recent talk with Suzuki's top engineer, Takashi Nakayama, the next Suzuki Swift is being engineered to meet U.S. crash standards. With that being said, Suzuki is still staying tight lipped regarding whether or not the globally acclaimed Swift will come to the U.S. or not. The people I've talked to at Suzuki have also not been able to say much about whether the Swift will show or not.

Let's hope Suzuki can gain some momentum with the Kizashi and the updated SX4. Then, I hope they've got one in the chamber with the Swift.

Astoria, Oregon in the Suzuki SX4

For my wife's birthday, we drove to the cool city of Astoria, Oregon. This maritime city is rich in history and is near the mouth of the the Columbia River. The drive on US30 from Portland is beautiful, although more entertaining driving routes exist through the hills of the Coast Range. We simply wanted to get there quickly, so HWY 30 it was.

Once in Astoria, we visited Fort George Brewery and Public House for some fantastic beer and great food. We got the beer taster, which included 10 beers. Our favorite was the Cavatica Stout, which was outstanding. I had a good burger, Mercedes had albacore fish and chips—super delicious.

After leaving the brewery, we visited the Astoria Column, then headed down US 101 towards Warrenton, OR. FYI, there's a Suzuki dealership in Astoria, and we saw quite a few Suzukis, mostly SX4s. I think we counted about five or six within about 10 minutes!

Once in Warrenton, we headed to Sunset Beach. This is one of our favorite places to go, and you can drive along the beach, as seen in the video below. In fact, you can actually drive this beach all the way to Seaside, OR, which is about 13 miles via HWY 101, but a bit less on the beach. Due to the high tide, we just drove north a bit, and turned around. The SX4 did great; we were able to use the AWD "lock" model, which splits the power 50/50 to the front/rear wheels.

Before returning to Portland, we stopped in Seaside and Cannon Beach. We did stop at Ecola State Park, which is a gorgeous ocean-side place to relax and take in the Oregon coast.

Finally, it was back to Portland via US 26. A great day trip—Subcompact Culture style.

Amazing twin-charged Subaru Justy project with video

Twincharged Subaru Justy
While browsing the Subaru Justy Forum, I ran across what might be the craziest, most awesome Justy project ever. Although people have swapped WRX engines and running gear into the little Subarus in the past, this forum member from Switzerland built up an existing Justy 1.2-liter three-banger, and added not only a turbocharger, but also a supercharger. This is not just some backyard special. This baby is built.

Twincharged Subaru JustyThe Swiss builder used an Eaton M45 supercharger from a VW Golf V GT, and a turbocharger from a SAAB. Obviously, the supercharger helps the low-end power. In addition, the engine has aftermarket Carrillo rods, an enormous front-mount intercooler, an aftermarket radiator in the rear, a high-performance clutch, a modified oil pump, and a bunch of other goodies. The car is not finished, and it looks to be an on-going project.

So what does it sound like? Check the videos below:

Be sure to watch this second video all the way to the end ...

Be sure to check out the entire thread below for the complete build.

Honda CR-Z to have six-speed manual

Announced at the Tokyo Auto Show today, the Honda CR-Z hybrid, essentially a 21st century Honda CR-X, will be available in the U.S. with a six-speed manual. The car will launch in February in Japan, and should arrive in the U.S. next fall.

From some of the photos I saw on Autoblog, it looks like the CR-Z will not be too terribly bloated compared to the diminutive original CR-X—a good thing.

Will this be the first sporty, affordable hybrid?

Next Nissan Micra headed to U.S.

Well, it looks like Nissan is certainly taking the small car market seriously in the U.S. The company just announced that the next generation global small car (Nissan Micra, I assume) which will slot under the Versa, will be sold in the U.S. The photo above is a current Micra. The next world car could resemble a recently released drawing. In addition, Nissan is saying this vehicle will have a three-cylinder engine. FYI, I believe the last three-banger on the U.S. market was the Chevrolet Metro/Suzuki Swift.

Not surprisingly, I've always dug the Nissan Micra, and think it'll be a worthy, and very direct competitor, to the Toyota Yaris liftback and the Hyundai Accent hatchback, among other subcompact vehicles.

Kudos to Nissan for offering up the Cube, Versa, and allegedly the next Micra in the U.S.

Suzuki SX4 auxiliary cable

Suzuki SX4 Auxiliary Cable
Our base model AWD Suzuki SX4 did not come with an auxiliary jack for an MP3 player, and the dealer wanted $125 for the iPod interface. However, as luck has it, I stumbled upon a cheap, incredibly easy solution.

A while back, a Canadian member of SX4Club.com made some auxiliary/MP3 cables for use with the Suzuki head units. They simply plugged into the back, and had a 3.5mm male end that plugged right into an MP3 player. I was able to pick one up second hand for $20 from SX4Club.com's classifieds section. Cheap, easy, and totally worthwhile install!

FYI, you can make your own, too. There are several threads on the forum to show you how.

A bit bigger: 2010 Suzuki Kizashi test drive

Photobucket

Although better known for its motorcycles in the U.S., globally, Suzuki automobiles outsell Subaru, Mazda, and Porsche combined, and in many years, Suzuki is the best-selling auto manufacturer in Japan. Here in the States, the company is trying to get onto the radar of mid-sized car buyers, and its latest release, the 2010 Suzuki Kizashi sports sedan, might do that.

Already a 2010 North American Car of the Year nominee, the Kizashi should be on many people's shopping lists, especially here in Portland, OR. Why? Because it will be available with all-wheel drive—something many Portland residents have found to be a desirable amenity. With our rain-slicked streets, nearby snow-covered mountains, and abundance of twisty roads, Portland is a hotspot for all-wheel drive vehicles.

So it's fitting that Suzuki chose Portland as the site of the vehicle's west coast launch. I was invited to drive the vehicle at Portland International Raceway. Let's take a look.

Photobucket

EXTERIOR/INTERIOR
If you took the Suzuki badges off of the car, brought it down to Pioneer Courthouse Square, and asked people what kind of car they thought it was, I'd bet no one would guess it was Suzuki. Although not necessarily groundbreaking with regards to style, the car looks handsome, sophisticated, and upscale. Size wise, its towards the smaller end of the mid-size segment.

Kizashi is available in four trim levels: S, SE, GTS, and SLS. Standard interior features include power everything, sport seats, push-button start with keyless entry, steering wheel audio controls, dual climate control, and iPod connectivity. All Kizashi interiors look great, with the SLS's two-tone leather interior (pictured here) being a standout with a very upscale look.

Options include 10 speaker, 425 watt Rockford Fosgate stereo, Bluetooth connectivity with streaming iPod ability, and Home Link universal garage door opener, windshield wiper rain sensor, and rear parking sensors, among other things.

ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN
Mechanically speaking, Kizashi is available in either front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine making 185 horsepower. Front drivers are available with either a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). All-wheel drive models are available only with the CVT. FWD fuel economy will be as high as 23 city and 31 highway; AWD as high as 23 city and 30 highway.

Other notable features include standard four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), a four-wheel independent suspension, and distinctive dual-exit exhaust outlets. Wheel and tire combos range from 16"–18". All of the cars in these photos wear the 18s.

Photobucket

DRIVING
My first session behind the wheel had me piloting an AWD Kizashi through a wet slalom course. The combination of AWD, traction control, and stability systems performed seamlessly, offering excellent grip on the wet pavement. The car remained composed during cornering, and didn't make any unexpected moves. Driven back-to-back against an AWD 2010 Subaru Legacy and an AWD Audi A4, the Suzuki proved itself a worthy competitor.

I also rode along with a Pro Drive instructor as we did a high-speed avoidance maneuver in a FWD CVT Kizashi, a new Acura TSX, and a new Mazda6. When thrown into an emergency situation, the Suzuki's reflexes, aided by its traction and stability systems, were impressive. Suzuki prides itself on the fact its traction/stability control systems work well and are as unobtrusive as possible to the driving experience, something enthusiasts will appreciate.

Next, I got to drive some laps on the racetrack in a Kizashi GTS with the manual transmission, and the car felt very athletic; surely this is sportiest version of the lineup. Even without AWD, the grip from the optional 235/45/18 tires was very good, and the suspension was firm enough to be entertaining, but soft enough to be comfortable. The 185 horsepower engine makes good use of its powerband, and never felt anemic.

Finally, I took another six-speed manual Kizashi through a dry set of S-turns, showcasing the car's quick steering, nimble handling, and strong grip. When driven back to back against the Volkswagen CC and Nissan Altima, the Kizashi felt the most nimble and sporting of the group.

Through all three tests, it was apparent that Suzuki kept the enthusiast in mind when engineering the car.

Photobucket

PRICE AND THE COMPETITION
The FWD base model Kizashi should start under $20,000, and well-equipped AWD models should be available between $22,000–$24,000. At these prices, Suzuki should be able to undercut many of its competitors, both FWD and AWD. But there are a ton of cars in this segment including Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Mazda6, Volkswagen Passat, Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Malibu, and Portland favorite, Subaru Legacy.

Suzuki will need to step up its marketing efforts to get the word out. But, if it can get people into its showrooms and behind the wheel, buyers will be rewarded with an affordable, sporty, all-weather sports sedan backed by with Suzuki's seven year, 100,000 powertrain warranty.

Snow tires: A worthy wintertime investment

If you don't already know, winter tires—totally worth the money. It's amazing how well they work in snow, ice, slush, and cold temperatures. Growing up in Minnesota, we actually never used them. However, the last winter I spent in Wisconsin, I bought a set of Nokian winter tires, and could not believe how well they worked in snow. I was convinced.

Anyway, I wrote an article on the benefits of snow tires for ThePortlander.com, a blog all about Portland, OR. Check the story out at the link below.

A custom Korean by Kiwis: Kia Soul Destroyer

The Kia Soul is being sold all over the globe, including in New Zealand. Kia NZ built the Soul Destroyer as a promotional vehicle. The car has a flat-black finish with custom graphics, Autolign lowering springs (down an inch in the front; 1.6" in the rear), a body kit, leather interior, and some big custom wheels that are different on each side of the car. This is definitely the meanest looking Soul I've seen thus far.

VIDEO: Crashing through snowbanks, '70s Civic style

Shot in 2000 or 2001, here I am piloting a 1979 Civic 1200 through snowbanks in Menomonie, WI, home of the University of Wisconsin - Stout, where I attended college.

See, back in 2000, my roommate Scott and I bought this '79 Civic for $350 off of a dude in Eau Claire, WI. We got it solely as a winter beater—and it was awesome.

It had 145/80/12 tires, a two-speed Hondamatic transmission, and 1980s Nissan Sentra bumpers welded on front and rear. To that, we added a rattle-can "New Holland Yellow" paint job, a new muffler (just a glasspack, really), an "I Love Mullets" bumper sticker, and some Walmart trailer lights mounted up front for fog lights.

This little car was beast in the snow. Traction was never an issue, since it didn't have enough power to spin the tires—the power-sucking Hondamatic transmission helped with that, too. The narrow 145mm tires cut through snow like two pizza cutters going through a pepperoni with extra cheese. Plus, it had an awesome heater, a great rear defroster, and it was as reliable as the sun rises and sets (that is, after we put a new battery in it).

What's the best wintertime subcompact?

Winter is right around the corner. Heck, some of my friends in Minnesota have already received measurable snowfall. I've got my mismatched studded winter tires ready for my Yaris, and our AWD Suzuki SX4 is just itching for its first trip up the mountain.

The AWD SX4 gets my vote for best currently available subcompact in the the snow, at least in the U.S. It's got all-wheel drive and a "lock" mode that splits power 50/50 to the front/rear wheels—great in the deep stuff.

However, there have been some pretty good small 4WD/AWD vehicles sold in the U.S.:

- 4WD Subaru Justy
- 4WD Toyota Tercel wagon
- 4WD Dodge Colt Vista
- AWD Mitsubishi Expo LRV/Eagle Summit Wagon/Plymouth Colt Vista
- Suzuki Samurai

Let's not discount the ability of some FWD vehicles with a good set of snow tires, too. My old 1979 Honda Civic 1200, with it's 145/80/12 tires was beast in the snow.

So what do you think the best wintertime subcompact is or was?

Subcompact Culture at SEMA

As of today, there are 22 days until the 2009 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, and Subcompact Culture will be there to bring you the best the show has to offer.

This year should be an interesting one. People are predicting lower attendance due to the economy. However, I'm sure the show will still be pretty darn big. In addition, SEMA was offering the "SEMA Show Enthusiast Program" allowing non-industry people into the show. Registration is now closed, for the Enthusiast Program, but I do know a few people who made it in.

For those who have never been to the show, it's pretty amazing. There's so much stuff to see: Cars, trucks, powersports vehicles, wheels, tires, accessories, you name it. If you ever do get the chance to go, I highly recommend it.

Toyota Echo and Smart ForTwo among "Worst Cars" of the decade

According to Cars.com, two subcompacts—the 2000–2005 Toyota Echo, and the 2008–current Smart ForTwo—made it on their list of "Worst Cars of the 2000s."

The article says the Echo "just wasn't a very good car," and that it didn't attract many buyers. As for the ForTwo, they said the car didn't deliver on the benefits of being small. It didn't have great fuel economy, had an SUV-like propensity to roll over, and had a not-so-stellar transmission.

The full list included (in this order):

2001–2005 Pontiac Aztek
1999–2002 Daewoo products (all)
1999–2002 Isuzu VehiCROSS
2002–2008 Jaguar X-Type
1995–2005 Pontiac Sunfire
1997–2001 Cadillac Catera

He's just not that into you: Many people not buying small cars, and don't like the ones they have ... and my opinion

It's no secret that small car sales have been down, as have many other vehicle segments. However, the subcompact and compact markets have been down even further than other segments. This is according to an article on NewsChief.com, who sites that cars, such as the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, and Chevrolet Aveo, have had slower sales recently. (This just in: Fire is hot, and water is wet.) The article also states that many people who bought smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles when gas prices spiked above $4.00 a gallon are having buyer's remorse, and wish they had a larger vehicle.

The article mentions that interest in larger vehicles and SUVs has risen, while overall interest in small cars has "plummeted."

The article is not an Op-Ed piece, and does have a lot of statistics, and is with a the read. It gets my blood boiling a bit, though.

My opinion

My take? Many people have short memories with regards to gas prices. Personally, I can't imagine gas prices staying where they're at. Then again, I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong.

Secondly, I am not the kind of person that believes all people should be driving tiny cars and that trucks and SUVs are four-wheeled evil. I would never tell someone they shouldn't buy a kind of car. However, I think a lot of people still get wrapped up in the "bigger is better" idea. Today's crop of small cars are the best they've ever been in the U.S., and there are a whole lot of new small cars coming to the States soon that will be even better.

It's always been a challenge to get Americans into small cars, and I assume it will continue to be that way for a long time. I suppose, if anything, we're all seeing a neat automotive experiment to see if, given the option, American will purchase smaller vehicles. Maybe not at $2.50 a gallon, but perhaps again if and when gas spikes.

2010 Hyundai Accent Changes

The Hyundai Accent is one of the few subcompact that is selling better than it did last year, and that's quite an achievement. So what does Hyundai have up its sleeve for 2010?

There have been a few updates, the most notable being the new "Blue" model. This model will start at $9,970 and has transmission tweaks and a lower ride height. This helps the Blue get mileage ratings of 28 city, 36 highway. Other Accents get 28/34 with manual, 27/36 with the automatic.

Other updates will include the availability of USB and iPod connectivity on all audio-equipped models, and steering wheel audio controls on Accent SE (optional on GLS). There are also blue-backlit gauges, available ABS on the GS, and standard cruise control and sunroof on the SE model.

Power will continue to be a 1.6-liter engine making 110 hp and 106 ft./lbs. of torque. Five-speed models will get a shift light telling drivers when to shift for optimal fuel economy. Plus, there will be an "ECO" light telling drivers when optimum fuel economy is being achieved.

Prices will range from the above-mentioned $9,970 for the Blue and $16,995 for the top-of-the-line SE three-door hatchback.

Toyota FT-86 Concept

If you read any of the automotive blogs, you've probably heard about the upcoming RWD Toyota/Subaru coupe that's supposed to come out. Thoughts of a Subaru-powered AE-86 remake have been dancing the heads of sports car fans (and drifting enthusiasts) since the news of the car hit the Internet. Well, behold the Toyota FT-86 Hachi-Roku.

My first question with regards to concepts is how large they are. It's always kind of hard to tell until you get up next to one. However, let's put it this way:

Toyota FT-86Nissan 370ZMazda Miata
Length163.78"167.2"157.3"
Wheelbase101.18"100.4"91.7"
Width69.2972.8"67.7"

So, the FT-86 is a tad shorter than the 370Z, but longer than a Miata, although the 86's wheelbase is close to the 370's. Sounds pretty intriguing to me. FYI, for comparison's sake, the Honda Fit is only about 2" shorter and narrower, and has a 3" shorter wheelbase. So, the FT-86 won't be very large. Fhe FT-86, unlike the 370Z and Miata, is supposed to be a 2+2, so you can get four people into it. The FT-86 will be powered by a 2.0-liter Subaru "boxer" or horizontally opposed four cylinder.

This concept will bow at the Tokyo Motor Show, and will allegedly go on sale in 2011. Finally some adrenaline from the Big T. More pics over at Autoblog.com.

2010 North American Car of the Year candidates inlude Kia Soul

The 2010 North American Car of the Year is a pretty big deal. There are 15 cars in the running, including the small Kia Soul. As I stated in my Soul review, you get a lot for your money with the Soul, and I can see why it's been nominated. FYI, the complete list looks like this:

2010 Volkswagen Golf
2010 Toyota Prius
2010 Subaru Legacy
2010 Porsche Panamera
2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
2010 Mazda3
2010 Honda Insight
2010 Kia Soul
2010 Ford Taurus
2010 Ford Fusion
2010 Chevrolet Camaro
2010 Buick LaCrosse
2010 BMW 335d
2010 Suzuki Kisashi
2010 Cadillac CTS Sportwagon

If I had to hedge my bets, I'd say the Taurus will get the award. We'll see!
