Four Fiat 500s for 2011

Fiat 500 Abarth
It's been reported by Automotive News that there will be four different versions of the Fiat 500. Allegedly, the 500 will come in hatchback, convertible, wagon, and "sporty hatchback." And by "sporty hatchback," they mean the Abarth version. I can't hardly wait to see the comparison tests vs. the MINI Cooper S.

VIDEO: "Fifth Gear" reviews Toyota's iQ

The UK's "Fifth Gear" has this video review of the Toyota iQ. For those of us who haven't seen an iQ in person, the video gives some good shots of the interior, gives a good idea of the size, and notes some of the innovations. Plus, it finally shows what the "3 + 1" seating really is.

Aston Martin to sell rebadged ... Toyota iQ?

Aston Martin to sell Toyota iQ?
From the "huh?" files comes news that UK-based Aston Martin has plans to sell a rebadged version of the Toyota iQ microcar. According to Bloomberg.com, the British car maker will start selling the iQ as the "Cygnet" in 2010. Oh yeah, if you didn't know, Cygnet means "young swan." This vehicle will be billed as a luxury commuter car.

Okay, I know it's not April Fools today. I'm glad to hear that luxury automakers are seriously considering offering subcompacts as part of their lineups. I mean, I guess BMW has MINI, and Daimler has Smart. So why can't Aston Martin get into the action? It just seems odd to me. But hey, I'm cool with it.

Road Trip: Hood River, Oregon

A bit over an hour to the east of Portland, OR is the town of Hood River. There's a lot to do once you get there, but getting there is a lot of fun, too. If you take Interstate 84 there, like we did, you'll go through The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area rewarding you with fantastic views of the river, rock formations, and just the overall beauty that is "The Gorge." Cool stops along the way can include Multnomah Falls, Bonneville Dam, and numerous parks and trails.

We stopped at Cathedral Ridge Winery on our way into the city. They have beautiful grounds on the outskirts of Hood River, as well as some pretty good vino. There are a number of wineries around Hood River. If you go, make sure to get a wine map of the area so you can visit the various other establishments.

Once in Hood River, there's a ton to do. Hood River is the windsurfing capital of Oregon (if not the world), due to the frequently windy conditions along The Gorge. There's also tons of hiking and mountain biking trails nestled throughout the hills. It's sort of a Mecca for outdoor enthusiasts.

We chose to partake in another thing Hood River is well known for: Beer. There are three breweries in the city: The well-known Full Sail Brewing, Horse Feathers Brew Pub, and Double Mountain Brewery. Not bad for a city with a population of 21,536 people. We stopped at Double Mountain for lunch and the beer sampler (at left). Great beer; the Pilsner, the IRA (India Red Ale) and "Hop Lava" were standouts. We grubbed on the meatball sandwich, too. You can take beer home with you in their 64oz growlers, as well.

After lunch at Double Mountain, we walked down to Full Sail to pick up their new Session Black dark lager. I haven't cracked one open yet, but at $10 for 12 beers, I probably can't go wrong ( regular Session Lager is good stuff at a good price, too).

Another thing Hood River is known for is a lot of cool shops. Whether you're looking for clothing, jewelry, outdoor equipment, or just about anything else, Hood River probably has it on Oak St., which is the main drag. We went into a vintage clothing store called "That's Swank," and found a pretty awesome old Ford Pinto t-shirt. The text read "Join the Ford Stampede ... or get stomped!" Apparently it was an original 1970s shirt, too.

After enjoying Hood River, it was time to mosey back towards Portland. We hopped on I-84 west and decided to take the Historic Colombia River Highway back. We hopped on at exit 35, and took it all the way into Troutdale, OR, or about 33 miles.

This narrow two-lane highway is twisty, curvy, and passes several historic monuments, scenic viewpoints, and numerous waterfalls including the famous Multnomah Falls. We stopped at Latourell Falls, which was gorgeous. The other place we stopped was the Vista House. This was a rest area built on the Historic Highway during the 1920s. It's one of the best views of The Gorge from just about any road.

We had a fantastic time on our day trip to Hood River. Next time I'll remember to bring my real camera so I'm not stuck taking pictures using my camera phone. The picture below is looking out over The Gorge from the Vista House.

GM to build next-generation subcompact in Michigan

According to Autoblog, General Motors will be building its next-generation b-segment (subcompact) car in Lake Orion, Michigan. So what does that mean? That means that for the first time in decades, GM will be producing a subcompact in the states, and 1,400 workers get to keep their jobs.

The current Chevrolet Aveo is built in South Korea by GM/Daewoo; the Geo/Chevrolet Metro was built it Canada; the old Pontiac LeMans was also built in South Korea. Not since the Chevrolet Chevette has GM manufactured a subcompact on American soil.

Fiat 500 to be only actual Fiat-badged product in the U.S.

According to the Detroit Free Press, it appears that although some Fiat models will be headed to the U.S. as Chryslers, Dodges, and Jeeps, the subcompact 500 will be the only Fiat to actually carry the Fiat name. It will be a stand-alone model, similar to the way BMW's MINI brand is sold.

The 500 will be built in Toluca, Mexico and be introduced in mid 2011.

Subcompact 4x4: The Suzuki Jimny

Suzuki Jimny
Remember a certain Suzuki 4x4 from the '80s-'90s that was all the rage? It was small, cheap, and extremely capable off road? Of course you do—it was the Suzuki Samurai. The Samurai, which is known as the "Jimny" (not to be confused with "Jimmy") in other parts of the world, disappeared from U.S. showrooms in 1995, with the larger Sidekick taking over Suzuki's 4x4 duties in the States.

However, in other parts of the world Suzuki kept producing a subcompact 4x4, and it remains in production today, although much updated from the U.S.-spec Samurai.

The Jimny actually dates back all the way to 1970, when Suzuki offered the little off-roader with a tiny air-cooled, two-cylinder 360cc engine. However, a lot has changed since then. However, the Jimny has remained true to it's core: It's a small, Spartan, off-road capable vehicle that delivers excellent fuel economy.

ENGINE, SUSPENSION, SPECS
The current Jimnys are offered with a choice of 1.3-liter engines (one with variable valve timing, one without) or a 1.5-liter diesel. They feature four-wheel-drive (complete with a 4WD high and 4WD low gearset), a true ladder frame, and solid front and rear axles—the preferred front suspension of off-road enthusiasts. (Currently, only the Jeep Wranger, and heavy-duty pickups such as the Ford Super Duty still offer this robust suspension type in the U.S.).

Fast it ain't. A 0-62 mph jaunt takes between 14.1 and 17.2 seconds depending on engine and transmission choice. However, this little beast is frugal at the pump: Nearly 40mpg on gas; no doubt more with the diesel.

And make no mistake about it: The Jimny is small. Of course, its diminutive size makes it very nimble. Add to these specs its true truck underpinnings and you've got the recipe for a four-wheeled mountain goat. To get an idea of the Jimny's size, here are some spec comparisons between a Jimny and a two-door Jeep Wrangler:

Suzuki JimnyJeep Wrangler (2DR)
Wheelbase88.56"95.4"
Length144.5"152.8"
Width63"73.7"
Curb weight 2,337-2,546 lbs.3,760-3,785 lbs.

modified Suzuki Jimny

AFTERMARKET
The Jimny is a popular off-road vehicle in Japan and Europe, and there are plenty of companies offering suspension, engine, and drivetrain upgrades to make these little vehicles extremely capable off the pavement. In fact, a look through Japan's 4x4 Magazine, reveals multiple advertisers selling Jimny upgrades. For example, check out www.imageon.jp, which sells some pretty extreme Jimny upgrades, or www.autocross.co.jp, also offering some serious Jimny products.

JIMNY IN THE U.S.?
Since the Samurai was offered up in the U.S., is there a chance the Jimny could come back to the U.S.? It certainly would be an unfilled niche in the U.S., since there are no more small 4WD vehicles here anymore. Perhaps with a bit more power, some crash testing, and time, the U.S. could see a Jimny ... er Samurai again. I know I'd be in line to get one, as would a lot of off-road enthusiasts looking for an alternative to the Jeep Wrangler.

UK-spec Toyota iQ3: A glimpse at America's iQ?

Toyota iQ3
Toyota has been selling the iQ for a few months now in the UK and Japan. Today, Toyota announced a new 1.3-liter (vs. 1.0-liter) engine option for the UK-spec iQ.

The iQ3, as it's called, features a dual-VVT-i 98 HP engine that twists out 92 ft./lbs. of torque. Not bad for a vehicle this size. However, this still won't make the iQ a rocket ship; Toyota claims the iQ3 will do 0-62 in 11.3 seconds. Toyota also claims the iQ3 will achieve 58.9 MPG with the six-speed manual transmission and 55.4 MPG if buyers opt for the CVT. Keep in mind that's on the European driving cycle, so U.S. standard will likely be a skosh lower.

So will this more-powerful 1.3-liter iQ be the variant the U.S. receives? I'd bet it will be, as I don't foresee Toyota offering the little 1.0. The iQ will probably be sold as Scion, too, and when the iQ concept was shown at the New York Auto Show, it did in fact have a 1.3 liter with 93 HP.

Anyway, the full iQ3 UK press release can be found at WorldCarFans.com.

J.D. Power 2009 Initial Quality Study: Top Subcompacts

J.D. Power and Associates just released its 2009 Initial Quality Study. And the top vehicles in the subcompact class are the Toyota Yaris, the Hyundai Accent, and the Honda Fit (in that order).

Most people have become accustom to seeing Toyota and Honda in the top few spots, but in yet another move that solidifies the fact that the Koreans are building better vehicles, the Hyundai Accent came in above the Honda Fit. In fact, in overall quality, Hyundai scored slightly higher than Honda overall, with both brands outscoring Toyota, which placed seventh (down two spots from 2008).

Who else is hot on the heels of Toyota? Ford and Chevrolet with only 1 and 2 more problems per 100 vehicles than Toyota, respectively. This year's industry average was 108 problems per 100 vehicles; 2008's average was 118.

Most improved had to have been Suzuki, which went from the 32nd spot (of 36 brands) in 2008 to 10th of 37 in 2009. You can probably attribute that to the phasing out of the Daewoo-badged vehicles, and the proliferation of the SX4 into the market.

Last place for 2009 was BMW's subcompact MINI brand, which was second to last in 2008. Smart, the other all-subcompact brand, placed third-to-last this year.

Will Americans buy cars with engines smaller than 1.5 liters?

Toyota 1NR-FE 1.0-liter engineA few of us Yaris owners were speculating on the next generation Toyota Yaris, and which powerplant it will have. It was noted that the current 1.5-liter, 16-valve DOHC 1NZ-FE engine (offered in the Toyota Yaris, Echo, Prius [1NZ-FXE]; Scion xA, first-generation xB) looks like its being phased out of the company. The new Prius is using a 1.8-liter engine. The Toyota iQ in Asia and Europe has an engine displacing 1.0 liter, and will soon get a 1.3-liter (the 1NR-FE above).

General Motors has said they will be introducing 1.4-liter engines to the U.S. in the near future, too, including in their Aveo replacement, and in the upcoming Cruze compact. GM hasn't offered an engine that small since the Chevrolet Metro's 1.3-liter mill.

However, will Americans buy a vehicle with a 1.3- or 1.4-liter engine? There haven't been many cars sold in the U.S. with engines under 1.5-liters in size. A few models dared do go small. These cars had the last of the 1.5-and-under engine displacements:

Make/ModelEngine sizeProduced until
Honda Civic1.3 liter1987
Renault Alliance1.4 liter1987
Chevrolet Sprint1.0 liter1992
Daihatsu Charade1.0 liter1992
Subaru Justy1.2 liter1994
Geo/Chevrolet Metro1.0 liter2000
Geo/Chevrolet Metro1.3 liter2001
Honda Insight1.3 liter*Current
Smart ForTwo1.0 literCurrent

*Honda Insight is a gas/electric hybrid

As you can see, the last straight-up gasoline-engine-equipped car to be sold in the U.S. with a displacement under 1.5 liters (other than the current Smart ForTwo) was the 2001 Chevrolet Metro that had 1.3 liters. This excludes Mazda's 1.3-liter rotary engines, and the 1.3-liter engine in the Honda Insight hybrid.

The 1980s
In the early 1980s, there were more cars with smaller displacements. The Datsun 210, and the Toyota Starlet and a few others, for example. In fact, the Starlet, produced until 1984, had an EPA fuel economy rating of 38/54! Granted, it only made 58 hp and twisted out 74 ft./lbs. of torque. In addition, cars were lighter due to less creature comforts and fewer safety requirements. A bit later, there were the Chevrolet Sprint, the Subaru Justy, the Renault Alliance, and others. It's no secret that many of these cars were painfully slow, though. However, not everyone was looking for a lot of power—just lots of fuel economy.

It's not size that matters. Is it power?
Honda L13AMaybe Americans aren't so much worried about engine size as engine output. If Toyota can produce a 1.3-liter engine that makes usable power, maybe people would buy it. Or is there a magic horsepower number?

The recent crop of subcompacts all have over 100 hp, even though nearly every United States domestic market (USDM) subcompact has a Euro/Asian counterpart with a smaller engine option (the Honda Fit's optional 1.3-liter L13A at right), not to mention diesel engines that still aren't making their way to our shores even though we now have low-sulfur diesel.

One thing is for sure: If more cars end up with smaller displacement engines, even with usable power, American consumers are going to have to be sold on the idea. This means different marketing and different in-dealer sales tactics.

I know there are some people that would love the smaller, less-powerful, more fuel-efficient engine option. Not everyone is looking for scads of power. Hey, we did OK with the Starlet and the 210 in the early '80s. Could we do it again? Or would these small-displacement-equipped vehicles be stillborn on dealer lots because they don't generate the power and have the size that American consumers seem to want?

Scion owner gets xD tattoo

Scion xD tattoo - Subcompact Culture
Des Monies, IA resident Kelsi, aka "Khans" from Scionlife.com, is pretty into her Scion xD. How into it? She's got custom wheels, exterior vinyl graphics, and unique interior and engine bay bits. Oh yeah ... and a Scion xD tattoo.

The ink, located on the inside of her left bicep, matches the graphics on her xD.

"I actually got the tattoo first. It holds a lot of meaning, not just the car itself ... the Scion brand has done a lot for me. I know some don't like it, but that's cool. It's not for other people."

Well there you go: Custom car and matching custom ink. Let's hope the car is good to her!

IIHS says small car bumpers are expensive to fix

The insurance-industry-funded Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) performed low-speed bumper collisions on seven vehicles including the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Smart ForTwo, MINI Cooper, and Chevrolet Aveo. Five of the seven cars received "poor" ratings; the Chevrolet garnered "marginal" rating, while the Smart got an "acceptable" rating.

So how expensive are these bumpers to fix? See the table below.

RatingFront fullFront cornerRear fullRear cornerWEIGHTED AVERAGE
Smart FortwoACCEPTABLE$1,480$663$631$507$899
Chevrolet AveoMARGINAL$1,071$1,437$1,370$612$1,155
Mini CooperPOOR$2,291$2,637$929$743$1,637
Toyota YarisPOOR$1,688$1,167$3,345$474$1,951
Honda FitPOOR$1,124$1,216$3,648$999$1,960
Hyundai AccentPOOR$3,476$839$2,057$831$2,123
Kia RioPOOR$3,701$1,758$3,148$773$2,705

The IIHS says, "Better bumpers don't have to be complicated. Auto manufacturers already know how to make good ones. Longer and taller reinforcement bars and energy-absorbing material are key to reducing damage in low-speed collisions."

I think they're thinking something more akin to the bumper on the Toyota van above.

For a complete lineup of photos and the full press release, click the links ... and don't hit anything on your way there. It'll be expensive.

Cash for Clunkers passes the House.

The House of Representatives has passed the "Cash for Clunkers" bill. Officially known as the Community Assistance to Recycle and Save Act (CARS Act), it will allow people to trade in older (e.g. post 1985, so not that old) vehicles that get poor MPG (e.g. less-than 18 MPG for passenger cars) and get a credit of $3,500. The rules are a bit different for trucks.

Proponents are hoping to get some low-MPG vehicles off the roads, and get some higher-MPG vehicles on the streets.

Jalopnik.com has a good breakdown of how this will is supposed to work.

So what's it mean for subcompact owners? Not much. Thanks for stopping.

UPDATE: Jalopnik has posted a handy-dandy chart simplifying the Cash-for-Clunkers bill. Check it out here.

The UK's Scion xD Toyota Urban Cruiser: AWD, diesel, and 57.6 MPG

Toyota Urban Cruiser
What do you call a Scion xD in the UK? You call it the Urban Cruiser.

Essentially the same vehicle, there are some differences for the UK market. First off, the Urban Cruiser has a different (and arguably better looking) front fascia than the Scion xD. It also comes standard with 16" alloy wheels. That's about it for the outside. On the inside, the UC features optional satellite navigation and push-button start/stop, too.

Here's where things get interesting: The Urban Cruiser offers Toyota's Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive system with a 1.4-liter D-4D diesel engine and "Optimal Drive," which is Toyota's engine start/stop technology. Cool, eh? Oh, by the way, this AWD diesel gets 57.6 MPG. Where do I sign up? The UC is also available with front-wheel-drive and a gas-powered 1.3-liter DOHC mill with dual VVT-i that gets 51.4 MPG. Granted these MPG figures are probably for the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), so they're a bit higher than the U.S., but they're still impressive, nonetheless.

A diesel-equipped UC with a manual transmission, AWD, and standard features will run about £16,400 GBP, or a whopping $26,341 USD. Auto prices are always higher in the UK, though.

Thanks to Yaris World's "Kaotic Lazagna" for the story idea!

Not the 2010 Hyundai Accent facelift

Contrary to a previous posting, the facelifted front end of the new Hyundai Verna will not be coming to America on the Accent. At least that's what Autoblog is reporting.

Autoblog contacted a member of Hyundai's PR team about the new front end. Hyundai stated that the new U.S.-market Accent will have it's own "distinctive" front end. And there you have it.

Test Drive: 2011 Ford Fiesta

2011 Ford Fiesta
I got the opportunity to meet up with Ford Fiesta Movement Agents Brad and Emma today for a test drive of the 2011 Ford Fiesta before our Third-Annual Mt. St. Helens cruise. Although the weather didn't make for great viewing of Mt. St. Helens, it was a perfect day to take a Fiesta out for a spin. Here are some thoughts after seeing and driving Ford's highly anticipated soon-to-be-sold-here subcompact.

EXTERIOR
Although I'd seen plenty of photos of the Fiesta, it's always hard to actually get an idea of a vehicle's size until you see it in person. For comparison's sake, I parked my Yaris in front of the Fiesta to give you an idea of Fiesta's size. You can see, it's similar in size to the Toyota. (Click the photo to enlarge)

Size: Toyota Yaris vs. Ford Fiesta
Exterior styling is always subjective, but I think the Fiesta looks great. It's got great lines, a bold design, and is far from bland. It's abundantly clear that this is not an econobox. The Fiesta has projector headlights, fog lights, LED taillights, side-marker turn signals in the mirrors, and great-looking 17" alloy wheels and 205/40/17 Pirelli tires. The Fiesta Movement vehicles also feature unique graphics.

Ford Fiesta interiorINTERIOR
Let's just cut to the chase: The Fiesta's interior is fantastic—not only for a subcompact, but for any car—and it's anything but plasticy. The dash is made from soft-touch material and the silver bits and pieces are of high-quality. And it just goes on from there. The seats are comfy with decent bolstering. The ergonomics are great; everything is within reach and feels like it's where it should be. The gauges are easy to read.

This vehicle has Bluetooth and a voice-recognition for things such as climate control. I'm told the U.S. versions will be available with Ford's Sync.

For folks sitting in the back seat, there is a good amount of leg room and it is comfortable. Cargo space is plentiful behind the rear bench. There's a lot more space there than my Yaris; it's probably similar to the Honda Fit.

Good looks: Check.
Nice interior: Check.

Let's hit the road.

DRIVING
Of course, driving is the most important aspect of a vehicle, and the Fiesta continues to impress on the road. The first thing I did was make a complete circle, and determined that the turning radius was very good. Another nice thing: A fat, chunky steering wheel.

The 1.6-liter engine provides the Fiesta with good acceleration. The car doesn't feel underpowered and the engine feels and sounds refined, even at higher RPM. According to Brad and Emma's Web site, their Fiesta is getting about 30mpg combined. Brad also said the Euro-spec Fiesta runs on premium fuel, although, the U.S. versions will run on regular.

Ford FiestaBeing a stickler for good shifters, I'm happy to report that the five-speed manual gearbox shifts very nicely; definitely among the best in the subcompact class. Shifts feel accurate and precise; throws are very adequate.

The ride is surprisingly good for a subcompact, even for a car with the 17-inch wheels and low-profile tires. Again, I had four people in the vehicle during the drive, and it never felt jarring or uncomfortable.

The Fiesta has a fairly narrow rear window. However, outward visibility was still good. It helps that the rear C-pillars aren't terribly wide.

The thing I am most impressed with about the Fiesta is its synergy. All the parts work well together to provide an excellent driving experience. The steering feels quick and responsive. The car rides well. The powertrain feels refined and smooth. The controls are where you want them. It all just comes together. And although small, the Fiesta doesn't feel cheap or tinny—it feels solid and substantial—a great thing in a small car.

Assuming the U.S.-spec Fiesta retains the same quality feel and excellent driving dynamics of the European-spec Fiesta Movement cars, Ford will, without a doubt, have a top contender in the subcompact market. It's got the right fuel economy, the right size, and will hopefully have the right price, too.

The Fiesta is selling like hotcakes in Europe, and I can see why. However, convincing Americans to buy subcompacts can be difficult. With that being said, the Fiesta is an excellent option for those who do want to buy small and also want to buy American.
